How a well-known furniture retail chain develops its sound identity
From client brief to custom Moods and a pilot-location test: the MoosBox process.
Brand identity comes first
For a furniture retail chain, the store experience extends beyond the products on display. Materials, room settings, lighting and collections help create a recognisable world; music can contribute to that atmosphere too. A typical challenge in this sector is finding a distinctive sound that supports the visit without overwhelming the space. In the project described here, the confirmed need was to express the brand’s identity through music rather than simply fill a space with a playlist. The first step was a client brief, followed by a series of calls and discussions. These exchanges established the intended musical character, the audience and the listening environment. Before selecting tracks, the team needed to understand what the brand wanted its spaces to communicate. That is what separates a tailored sound identity from a generic collection of songs.
Research and music production
Once we have listened to the client and agreed on a musical direction, we explore our catalogue for sounds that can express the brand. We do not start with a ready-made playlist: we start with what the client wants the music to communicate. The existing catalogue is the starting point, but not the only creative resource. When a particular sound is missing, the team checks with record labels to see what can be sourced, or creates music using MoosBox AI Studio. AI-assisted production expands the available options; it does not replace the musical judgement that guides the project. Each choice is assessed against the brand brief.
Custom Moods and real-world testing
The selected music is organised into custom Moods and programmes for different times of day. An hourly Mood is more than a list of tracks: it needs to work as a listening experience. Each Mood is tested in the studio and then reviewed with the client. Feedback informs revisions before the music is tested on air at a pilot location. This step brings the creative direction into the environment where people will actually hear it.
Music that follows the collection
One specific request involved adapting the Mood to the theme of a seasonal collection. The music had to reflect the collection’s character, rather than merely swap older tracks for newer ones. It is a useful example of how music can follow a changing creative direction while remaining connected to the wider brand identity. The programme is therefore reviewed and updated over time, instead of being treated as a one-off playlist.
How is this different from a playlist?
A playlist groups tracks. A Brand Sound Profile involves briefing, consultation, catalogue research, possible sourcing or production, custom Moods, studio testing, client review, pilot testing and ongoing updates.
Listen to the sound approach
A dedicated music demo is being prepared to accompany this Experience Story. It will illustrate the MoosBox approach, not reproduce or document the client’s actual project.
